Program Description: Join us for a hands-on gardening adventure designed especially for pre-K and kindergartners! In this fun and educational after-school camp, kids will explore the magic of seeds, fruits, and vegetables while planting something new each week. They’ll get to take their creations home, care for them, and watch them bloom and grow! Together, we’ll nurture curiosity and a love for nature—one sprout at a time. 

All supplies and materials are included in the registration fee.

Program Description: Winston Library will offer an exciting mix of hands-on crafts and free time, allowing your 2nd-5th grader to explore, create, and make new friends in a supportive and engaging environment.  Throughout the club, we’ll focus on STEM-inspired crafts that encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. Some of the activities we’ll feature include:

• Create Your Own Creature: Kids will create a new animal species from other animal features with clay.  We will then create a habitat diorama to display in the library.
• Building Bridges: Students will use popsicle sticks and glue to create strong yet lightweight bridges to test and improve their designs.
• Slime Chemistry: Fun and messy, this activity lets kids mix and measure ingredients to create colorful slime, learning about chemical reactions.

In addition to these hands-on projects, there will be plenty of free play, where kids can explore the library’s resources and relax with friends.

Program Description: Creative Kids Club is designed to inspire creativity, self-expression, and fine motor skill development. Students will enjoy creating seasonal crafts, nature-inspired activities, water color painting and much more!

Program Description: Join Mrs. Stelling for an exciting and hands-on course that combines photography, digital illustration in Procreate, and animation! This course is designed for students who want to explore their creative potential by blending traditional photography with digital art and motion. Students will:

1. Explore Photography Basics: Master the fundamentals of camera settings and techniques, learning how to capture stunning photos. Students will experiment with exposure, focus, and composition to create dynamic and expressive images.

2. Create Digital Art in Procreate: Dive into the world of digital illustration using Procreate. Students will learn to sketch, draw, and color, using the app's powerful tools to bring their creative ideas to life. Through fun exercises, students will explore how digital art can complement their photography work.

3. Animate Your Creations: Take your digital art and photos to the next level by learning the basics of animation. Students will explore techniques such as stop-motion and simple animations to bring their images to life. By combining photography, Procreate drawings, and animation, students will create engaging, motion-based projects.

Program Description:Chess is a great way for Ravenscroft students to increase their mental agility, concentration, memory, and analytical skills! We are excited to partner with Dragon Knight Chess again in 2024 to provide the opportunity for Lower School students to participate in this session of the Ravenscroft Chess Academy!  

In this program, students will learn chess fundamentals and strategies that enhance learning skills and critical thinking. Novice students and experienced players are encouraged to sign up, as we will have two levels of instruction and available experiences for both groups.

Program Description: In this ever popular program, all sessions will be a general lesson based on each participant's individual needs. Each participant will receive individualized instruction within the group setting. All sessions will focus on improving stroke technique and all strokes will be covered throughout the 4-day session. There will be some group activities but everything in the program will focus on individual improvement.

*Please Note: Participating Students will be escorted from the L/S to the Finley Center Pool at the conclusion of the school day. Coach Warren and his staff will help them change, if necessary. Parents can come to watch the sessions if they would like to. 

Students that are not picked up from the pool deck will be escorted back to the L/S (back carpool lot) and can be picked up there at 4:15 pm

Instructor: Greg Warren has been the Aquatics Director and Head Coach of the boys and girls swim team since 2005. In that time, Coach Warren has been a part of 6 State Championship winning teams. Before coming to Ravenscroft, he swam for UNC-Wilmington and was a nationally ranked age group swimmer while in High School. He has over 30 years experience teaching swimming skills in both the private and group settings. He is an instructor for the American Red Cross and certifies the Ravenscroft Facility, Staff and Coaches in CPR and AED. Coach Warren also teaches swimming in both the lower and middle schools and also teaches a lifeguard training elective in the upper school.

There will be two sessions for this program, one will be for 4th-5th grade boys (Mondays) and the other session will be for 6th-8th grade boys (Tuesdays)

This is a great opportunity for your child to work along side the Varsity Cheerleaders and learn about the sport of cheerleading. At the end of our intramural program we will have a performance during halftime of the Varsity Girls Basketball game, to give everyone the game day cheerleading experience as well as the option to cheer the whole girls game along side the Varsity Cheerleaders.

Program Instructors:  Samantha Womble joined the Ravenscroft community in 2022. She currently serves as the Head Coach for the Varsity Cheerleading team. Crystal Garris has served as the Head Coach of the JV Cheerleading team for multiple years, she is currently a Pre-Kindergarten instructor and runs the Spirit Team summer camp.

 

Program Description: During the girls' intramural basketball sessions, participants will engage in activities designed to enhance and improve skills in all areas associated with the game of basketball.  Basic game rules and strategies will be covered and implemented into small-sided gameplay.  Drills, games, and individual challenges will be modified to accommodate all skill levels.  The ultimate goal is to develop individual and team skills, and foster an appreciation and continued enjoyment of the game of basketball.

Instructor: David Myers, has coached basketball for over 25 years, including 15 as the Ravenscroft Girls’ MS Green team coach.  While in that position, he compiled a record of 202-37, including two undefeated seasons.  He has taught PE at Ravenscroft for 19 years, serving as Department Co-Chair for 18 years.  Coach Myers has a passion for working with young athletes, helping them develop the skills necessary to be successful in their chosen sport.  

 

Program Description: Join Coach Schutte & Coach Chaitin for the Ravenscroft intramural softball program which is designed for 4th-6th grade, beginner to intermediate (0-2 years experience) level players. Players will be taught softball fundamentals with a strong focus on FUN and building excitement for softball.  Players will get an introduction to technical instruction in throwing, fielding, base running, and hitting.  Additionally, the basics of balance, movement, speed, and strength, applicable across all sports, will be taught.  By the end of the program, players will begin putting together the concepts of competitive gameplay for their age and skill level competition.

Program Description: Come join Coach Meg Cline and Varsity field hockey players and learn the basics of field hockey!  In this clinic, Coach will teach you all the basics you need to know to be a Ravenscroft field hockey player through simple drills and (lots!) of different games. For those that completed the fall clinic- don't worry- Coach Cline has lots of ways to raise the bar and challenge you while you perfect your basics, so we hope to see you again! The field hockey clinic is a way to introduce a new sport to younger players in an encouraging environment full of positivity, teamwork, and confidence building!

To be added after confirming with Meredith Coach: Our last practice will involve a clinic with a local college coach where we can learn advanced skills and try out our play on a college field!

Program Description: Current 4th and 7th grade girls will continue to enhance the fundamental skills of lacrosse they have learned through this year and past years.

The girls will refine their throwing, catching, and cradling skills while being introduced to more game-like strategies involving shooting, competitive games, and scrimmaging.

The goal for that week is to have the girls gain a better understanding of the sport of lacrosse while enhancing their teamwork, athleticism, and confidence as young female athletes. Girls will practice their skills for the first three days and then put their skills to the test during a fun and competitive scrimmage on the final day!

Students will learn and practice breathing techniques, yoga poses, and tools to focus. Program Description: Chess is a great way for Ravenscroft students to increase their mental agility, concentration, memory, and analytical skills! We are excited to partner with Dragon Knight Chess again in 2024 to provide the opportunity for Lower School students to participate in this session of the Ravenscroft Chess Academy!  

In this program, students will learn chess fundamentals and strategies that enhance learning skills and critical thinking. Novice students and experienced players are encouraged to sign up, as we will have two levels of instruction and available experiences for both groups. We have two separate sessions one for beginners and one for more advanced players, if you are not sure which group is appropriate for your student please contact either dressner@ravenscroft.org or jon@dragonknightchess.com.

Dragon Knight Chess is dedicated to promoting scholastic chess instruction for all young people. Whether you just want to improve your chess knowledge to play with friends or are a serious tournament player, we can help advance your chess skills!

Program Description: Join Mrs. Stelling for a photography course specifically designed for middle school students eager to explore their creative side through the lens of a camera. Students will:

1. Master Camera Settings: Learn the essentials of camera functions and settings to capture stunning images. From adjusting exposure to understanding focus, students will gain hands-on photography experience.

2. Engage in Creative Assignments: Express your imagination through a variety of fun and challenging photography projects. Whether it's capturing unique perspectives or experimenting with different styles, these assignments will help students develop their artistic voice.

3. Build a Print Portfolio: Create a personalized portfolio featuring your best work. Students will select their favorite images, and bring home a portfolio of prints.

Program Description:  Let's have an art adventure! We will make work with clay, make bracelets, tie dye, make paintings and more. Projects can be tailored to the skill level of each student. Students will need to bring one white T-shirt from home, all other supplies and materials will be provided, and the students will be able to take all of their work home-their artwork makes great gifts!

At the end of each session, students will be escorted back to LS (back carpool lot) and can be picked up there at 4:30pm.

Program Description: Welcome to the Artfully Creative Curators, where we foster a love of art and appreciation of Ravenscroft’s The Hugh Morton, Jr. Art Collection, which includes over 90 art pieces cultivated since 1996.

Visual Arts faculty members collaborate with a select group of middle and upper school students who form the Morton Committee to facilitate projects linked to our art collection that curate art appreciation and artistic development. With the help of the Morton Committee, we will select a piece or two from our collection and create art inspired by the chosen artists using a variety of artistic materials and creative techniques.

At the end of this program, artists will take home the projects they created! Please join us for some artistic collaboration and creative curation!

Students are encouraged to bring a snack and a water bottle.

Amelia Karpowitz has been an Art instructor at Ravenscroft since 2015! She has had the privilege to teach all Lower School grades and loves teaching 3rd-5th grade Art this year! She received her Bachelor’s of Art degree from Brigham Young University and her Masters in Art Education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She enjoys watching movies and TV shows, reading books, practicing yoga, baking, and snuggling with her cat Scout when she is not working. She also enjoys playing board games and traveling with her husband, Joel, who is also a teacher here at Ravenscroft in the Upper School.

Kristen Callaghan has taught PreK-2nd grade Art at Ravenscroft since 2019! She received her Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from High Point University. She enjoys creating, getting messy, and experimenting with art. When Mrs. Callaghan is not teaching, she enjoys playing with her puppy, Willow, playing video games with her husband, and traveling!

Morton Committee Facilitators:

The Morton Committee is a select group of students from grades 5-12 who collaborate throughout the year to select pieces of art to add to The Hugh Morton, Jr. Art Collection. Each year, the Morton Committee visits different art venues and selects a piece of art to add to the permanent collection. We value this collection for its ability to enrich the lives of students, families, and faculty in our Ravenscroft community. The individual pieces of art are also used as teaching tools to explain different techniques and styles of art to our students.

Program Description: From survival bracelets to friendship bracelets, we will learn a different knot or tie each week. Students will learn how to make different designs with different fabrics to make keychains, lanyards, and bracelets.

All materials are included in price.

Program Description:"Fun with Music Theory" will use hands-on music activities and games to introduce and reinforce general musical concepts with note reading, rhythm, musical terms and the overall musical language.

The program is not instrument specific so that any musician can benefit from the information covered. There will be application of the ideas to a life size floor keyboard, giving a small introduction to the piano. But, most of the theory concepts can be applied to any musical studies.

Program Description: Yes, this game was invented and made famous by the Harry Potter series, and our librarians know it well. This game requires uncommon teamwork and focus to keep up with the constant and varied action.

It’s fun, challenging, and addicting! We will have snitches, beaters, bludgers, chasers, quaffles, and seekers. To earn extra points for their team, we will also have trivia during snack. Players get excited! You get to create your own flying broom!

Program Description: Ravens Dance Troupe is a dance group that will spend weeks learning and performing entertaining hip-hop choreography, incorporating jazz techniques.
