Tennis Player Jae Ramsey ’23 Voted N&O Athlete of the Week

Ravenscroft varsity tennis player Jae Ramsey ’23 was voted last week’s Raleigh News & Observer Athlete of the Week.

Jae received more than 50% of the 7,089 votes cast online, edging out Thales Academy’s Cameron Brewer and Cary Christian’s Burke White. She is Ravenscroft’s No. 1 player and won both of her matches last week, including rallying from a first set to win her match against an opponent from Durham Academy.

“I’m proud to be playing on the Ravenscroft varsity tennis team for my third year now,” Jae said. “For the past two years I’ve looked up to the No. 1 player on our team, and to now be the No. 1 this season is really exciting. I’m very proud of how I have improved over the past couple of years to be where I am now.”

Varsity tennis coach Debbie Peek said she’s proud as well of how Jae has stepped into this leading role.

“Even though she’s only a sophomore, Jae has taken on the burden of playing No. 1 in singles and doubles this season for the team. She has risen to the challenge, demonstrating a nice balance of power and consistency in her game,” she said.

Jae said the honor is especially meaningful given how much uncertainty there was about the possibility of athletic competition heading into the fall season.

“I’m so grateful we were able to have a tennis season this year, and for all the memories and bonds we have made together as a team,” Jae added. “To be nominated for Athlete of the Week, and winning, means so much to me. I can’t wait to see how the rest of this season goes with the team.”
