Six Upper School math students competed against high school teams from across the region at the 2018 Duke Math Meet on Nov. 3. The team, making Ravenscroft's first appearance at the event, finished in the Top 15.
The annual Duke Math Meet, organized by the members of the Duke University Mathematics Union and sponsored by the Duke mathematics department, brings approximately 40 six-person teams from several states and overseas together to compete in five rounds: Power Round, Team Round, Individual Round, Relay Round and Devil Round. The five highest-scoring teams and individuals receive medals, and the top 15 teams are published on the website.
The math team's faculty sponsor, Michael Erikson, said he and the team members were proud they earned a published ranking in the school's first appearance.
"I was very impressed by this team," Erikson said. "The competition problems are exceptionally challenging, and I think it is safe to say that all six of these students outperformed what I could have done!"
The students, who spent a half-day together preparing for the competition, intend to participate again next year. Members are team captain Lucy Hao '20, Mark Li '20, Michael Rutigliano '22, Jon Li '19, Bruce Zhu '21 and Sean Shen '21.
