Ravenscroft Students Win Young Artist Auditions Piano Competition

Three Ravenscroft students enrolled in our private lessons program have been announced among the winners of the Young Artist Auditions piano competition.

Elle Warner '26, a student of Claudia Hinson, won first place in the Concerto II division. Olivia Rivera '25, who studies under Cameron Bolin, won honorable mention in that same division. Elijah Smith '25, another of Bolin's students, won third place in Concerto III.

In addition, two Ravens taking lessons outside of our program were also recognized: Neil Awasthi '26 won first place in the category of Senior Composition for "The Chase"; and his sister, Sheila Awasthi '26, earned second place in the Royalty: Princess category.

In all, 21 Ravenscroft students from second through 10th grades competed. Students compete in divisions based on their proficiency level. In keeping with COVID-mitigation efforts, the program was virtual this year. Students submitted recordings of their performances in early March, and winners were announced last week.

"The Young Artists Auditions is a highly competitive event and typically involves more than 1,000 students in various levels and ages from around the Triangle and surrounding areas," Hinson said. "As Elle's private piano teacher, I couldn't be more proud of her dedication and hard work."

The purpose of the Young Artist Auditions, a program of the Raleigh Piano Teachers Association, is "to promote the performance of American piano music as well as choice piano pieces by non-American composers and to award competition winners. The intent is to encourage all piano students below the college level to perform, enjoy and create music and to make music an important part of their lives as they continue studying piano."

Enjoy the competition performances by Elle, Elijah and Olivia.

In addition, Ravenscroft recently held its own piano festival, at which 74 of the 80 participants were Ravens. Students taking private lessons from Hinson, Bolin, Ledford and Mary Royall Hight, plus a Ravenscroft student who studies under staff accompanist SK Chipley, participated.

Congratulations to all of our Ravens!
