Ravenscroft Student Publications Recognized by NCSMA

Ravenscroft's Upper School journalism classes have been recognized for their work by the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association, a statewide organization affiliated with the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Media and Journalism that works to promote excellence in scholastic journalism and respect for freedom of the press.

The 2019 statewide media awards, announced over the summer, included an Honor award for the 2018-19 Nevarmore Online News site and an Achievement Award for the 2018 Corvus yearbook. Both classes competed in the small-schools category.

Online News stories supplement the print version and include community events, sports and other news and videos. This recognition of Nevarmore Online News is the second for the program: the print version also received an Honor designation among small schools in 2018.

Because the yearbook was delivered in the fall of 2018, it was not critiqued until the spring of 2019. Upper School journalism teacher Tomeiko Carter said the recognition for the 2018 Corvus — produced during her first year at Ravenscroft — shows that the classes' approach to their content resonated with readers.

"Our yearbook staff worked over two semesters to create a book that would reflect the campus niches that make Ravenscroft feel like a 'home away from home,'" she said. "The Achievement distinction from NCSMA is a testament to our students' success in mirroring that sense of well-being. Our 'Make Your Space' theme demonstrates why Ravenscroft has become a nurturing 'nest' to its fledgling Ravens," she said.

Congratulations to these 2018 Corvus staff members for their outstanding work:
