Lead From Here Education: Teaching Parents About "Growth Mindset"

Students familiar with Ravenscroft's Lead From Here activities will no doubt remember the "buzz ring" challenge. Now, thanks to a recent parent workshop on the importance of maintaining a growth mindset, so will many of their parents!

On Wednesday, Jan. 10, approximately 20 parents joined Ravenscroft lead facilitator and pre-K teacher Lana Dubose for a Lead From Here workshop. Built around research and collaboration with the Center for Creative Leadership, these parent workshops provide an interactive and engaging vehicle for parents to learn about Lead From Here and the many traits of citizen leadership we are teaching our students through this integrated curriculum.

A critical component of learning to lead oneself, having a growth mindset empowers our students, faculty and staff (and parents!) to persevere in the face of setbacks, learn from their experiences, proactively seek and use feedback from others, and recognize any limitations of their own perspectives and preconceptions.

Dubose used the the buzz ring activity — in which participants work in teams to get and keep multiple metal rings spinning on a larger ring while passing it around — to show parents what it means to be growth-minded and then to put that learning into action.

"The buzz ring is not something most parents would be familiar with," Dubose explained. "It presents both a mental and physical challenge [for them] while giving me the ability to demonstrate to parents how to apply being growth-minded to the challenge."

Parents shared with Dubose that they were able to quickly recognize in some of their own actions when they had a "fixed" mindset instead of a growth mindset. Many noted that they found it valuable to learn the same Lead From Here concepts and language as their children so they, as parents, can make use of them at home.

"Working with CCL has been an empowering experience," Dubose noted, "and has helped me become more capable of increasing my students' achievement in the classroom and in their lives. It is making a big difference in our curriculum."

Parents are encouraged to join upcoming Lead From Here workshops to learn more about the framework and experience what our students do daily. For more information, please contact Colleen Ramsden, assistant head of school for academic affairs, at
