Golfer Kyle Kushnir '21 Wins TISAC Player of the Year

Varsity golfer Kyle Kushnir '21 was named the Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Conference Player of the Year yesterday following the conference championship match at Keith Hills Golf Course in Buies Creek. He shot a 75 in leading the Ravens to a second-place finish in the conference tournament.

The team placed second overall in the conference with a team score of 314. The Ravens were led by Kyle Kushnir '21 and Cole Wright '22, who shot a round of 75. Both athletes earned All-TISAC honors.

"My goals this year were to be the Player of the Year and to win the state championship as an individual," Kyle said. "It feels good to achieve my goal of being the Player of the Year. I have learned how to work as part of a team in an individual sport, which can be kind of hard to do. My teammates and coaches helped push me to be better over the years."

Varsity boys golf coach Phillip Shelton said of the recognition, "I am incredibly proud of Kyle for his accomplishments on the golf course. However, it is his growth as a young man and leader that has earned my gratitude and respect. While his skill is certainly impressive it is his dedication to hard work that will make him a successful player at Western Carolina University and beyond."

Of Cole's All-TISAC honor, he said, "Cole took his new role as a team captain as seriously as one can. He is as talented a player as I could ask for. More importantly, he commands the respect of the team necessary to hold everyone accountable. Even and especially himself — and me."

Next up for the Ravens will be the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association State Championship Qualifier on Monday, May 3, at The Grandover Resort, West Course, and the State Championship on Monday, May 10, at The Greensboro Country Club, Farm Course. Tee times are to be announced by the NCISAA.

Shelton said the team's perseverance, following the disappointing cancelation of much of last year's season due to COVID-19, has been impressive.

"I could not be more proud of the way this group of young men bounced back and competed," he said. "All of these guys are committed to getting better on and off the field of play. That kind of consistency makes coaching them a tremendous pleasure. We are looking forward to the State Championship competition. Thank you as well to seniors Clarke Haywood '21 and Jeron Perry '21. I am excited to see all of your future success."
