The N&O All-Metro Teams honoring outstanding winter-season athletes include a few familiar faces. Swimmers Matthew Youngbar '18 and Mary Pruden '18, wrestler Calvin Atkeson '18, and basketball players Chris Barnette '18 and Madison Taylor '18 represented Ravenscroft on their respective All-Metro teams, which recognize the area's strongest and most versatile student-athletes. Each of these athletes was also recognized as their team's Most Valuable Player at the Ravenscroft Varsity Sports Awards on March 4. Congratulations, Ravens!
Matthew Youngbar '18 (below, front row, at left) earned TISAC All-Conference honors in the last three seasons, with a total of four individual and three relay TISAC titles, and earned a varsity letter for each of his four years on the team. Matthew was named Male Swimmer of the Meet at the TISAC meet on Feb. 5. He is still considering his options for college but hopes to continue swimming.
Mary Pruden '18 (below, back row, second from right) is among the most decorated swimmers in Ravenscroft's history. She holds four individual state titles, two individual state records, four relay state titles, four individual school records, and was a member of all three relay school records. She was also a key member of the 2015 and 2016 state championship-winning teams. Mary has committed to swim for Columbia University in New York.
Calvin Atkeson '18 (below, back row, at left) is a two-time NCISAA state champion (competing in the 285-lb. weight class) and All-American who, with his 127th victory at the 83rd National Prep Wrestling Tournament Feb. 23-24, set the record for all-time wins by a Ravenscroft wrestler. Also a two-time NCISAA All-State and two-time Big East Independent Football All-Conference offensive lineman, Calvin will play football at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.
Chris Barnette '18 (below, back row, at left) was named the 2017 South Granville Holiday Tournament Most Outstanding Player and 2018 TISAC Player of the Year in addition to receiving 2018 NCISAA All-State recognition. He has committed to play at Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, North Carolina.
Madison Taylor '18 (below, front row, second from left) is a two-time NCISAA All-State and TISAC Player of the Year and 2018 McDonald's All-American nominee and 2018 NC Private School All-Star Basketball competitor. She has earned all-tournament selections from the John Wall Invitational in 2016, Granville Christmas Tournament in 2014 and East Guilford Christmas in 2013. She has committed to play basketball at College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina.
