Ravenscroft varsity wrestler Joel Brown '23 had a very successful holiday break on the mat, winning his weight class in two tournaments and earning Most Outstanding Wrestler at one.
Brown, an eighth-grader, competed in the 2018 Mark Adams Holiday Classic at Cary High School on Dec. 22-23, winning his 106-pound weight class with a last-second reversal for a 6-4 victory in the finals. He was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
Brown then competed in the Dixie Nationals America Crown Tournament Dec. 28-29 at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta. Continuing his run of success at this prestigious event, Brown went 5-0 over the two days, finishing with a finals victory over Eugene Harney of Ohio 12-2 to win the 105-pound weight class.
"The two titles, and particularly the two finals wins, were remarkable accomplishments for Joel and great indicators of how much he's progressed in his wrestling recently. He's a guy that expects to be getting wins on the national scene and competing with the best varsity 106-pounders around," Coach Garrett Cummings said. "He went out there and proved that to himself this holiday break."
"He's a young guy who not only has a lot of athletic talent but sincerely enjoys the work and sacrifice necessary for the highest levels of achievement in this sport," Cummings added.
