Ravenscroft Track & Field Hosts First Multi Championship
Ravenscroft Track & Field Hosts First Multi Championship

On Saturday, May 1, more than 20 Track & Field athletes competed in the first-ever Ravens Multi Championship, which featured a throwing pentathlon and a pentathlon. Other schools competing were St. David's, North Raleigh Christian Academy, Cardinal Gibbons and Trinity Academy.

The throwing pentathlon featured five different types of throws, each testing the athletes' abilities: shot put, discus, hammer, javelin and weight throw. The Ravens saw a clean sweep of first, second and third places in both the girls and boys throwing pentathlon.

MaLea Spooner '21 was the overall girls throwing pentathlon winner, setting a new school record of 1612 points. She also notched new school records in the weight throw (20' 2") and hammer (58' 11"). Talia Granick '21 (1341 points) took the silver in the throwing pentathlon, with Zoe King '22 (1340 points) taking bronze. Zoe also notched a school record in the javelin (84' 10.5").

In the boys competition, Gordon Kloster '21 took home the gold with a school-record 1986 points. Gordon accomplished this feat by throwing a new school record in both the javelin (73' 1.5") and weight throw (33' 1.75"). Michael Griffin '23 (1625 points) finished second while also throwing a school record in the hammer (90' 8"), and Mason Zervos '21 (1621 points) was third in the event.

In the pentathlon, athletes competed in the 100 hurdles (girls) or 110 hurdles (boys) as well as the long jump, shot put and high jump. The competition ended with an 800-meter run (girls) or 1500-meter run (boys).

"The pentathalon is a true test of athleticism featuring a wide variety of events for the well-rounded athlete," varsity head coach Mike Ramel said.

Zoe King '22 took third overall for her second bronze medal of the day with a new school record of 1959 points, while Alice Pedretti '23 (1391 points) took sixth place overall.

The boys competition saw Jonathan Phillips '21 win the gold medal in a school-record 2159 points. Additional Ravens finishing fifth through eight place in the event were Nick Fay '21 (1778 points), Davis Ellis '23 (1473 points), Alex Wood '23 (1450 points), and Jacob Margraf '23 (1405 points), respectively.

"Anytime you walk away with 10 new school records, it was a great day for our athletes!" Ramel concluded. "The whole group worked hard, supported each other, and had a record-breaking day. We look forward to most of them continuing on with the conference and state championships in coming weeks."

Great work, Ravens!
