6th Grade Exploratory Drama
This course introduces students to the dynamic art of theatre, with a primary focus on performance skills. Students will develop fundamental skills in script analysis, character development, physical expression, and vocal technique, which they will apply through a variety of individual, partnered, and group performance projects. Students will also develop an understanding and appreciation of the wide variety of technical, design, and production roles that help bring a performance to
life. This course includes two public performances: a first-semester showcase of student-written work, and a final culminating production of an existing script. The course encourages creativity, collaboration, and self-expression while helping students build confidence in a supportive and engaging learning environment.
MS Theatre Ensemble (7th & 8th Grades)
This course introduces students to the performance and technical/design aspects of drama, building their understanding and appreciation of all that goes into theatrical production both on and off stage. Students will develop and strengthen their acting skills, using script analysis, character development, and physical and vocal expression to create believable performances. They will also delve into the basics of playwriting, directing, stage management, costume design, and set design through both research and hands-on practice. The course includes two public performances: a showcase of student-written work and a fully-realized class production in which students may take on acting or design/tech roles. The course will challenge students to build skills in collaboration, communication, creative problem-solving, and self-expression within a supportive and encouraging environment.
Upper School Drama is a performance-based course offered each semester, although students are encouraged to participate for the entire year as several projects overlap the break in semesters. An Honors section is offered for advanced students in Upper School. Upper School Drama students are required to participate in all class productions, as well as attend all Middle School Drama productions.
