Coaches

  • Head Coach
    Head Coach Mike Ramel comes to Ravenscroft with extensive knowledge and experience coaching athletes over the past decade plus. He has been successful in developing and mentoring players at all levels. He currently works at Brooks Museums Magnet Elementary School (part of Wake County Public Schools) as a K-5 Physical Education Teacher. A native of upstate New York, he has spent the previous eight years in Southern California teaching physical education and coaching basketball, cross country, and track and field. His previous stop at Francis Parker School he was the Associate Head Boys Coach and Head JV Boys Coach. The Parker varsity earned postseason bids in each season including a semi-final appearance during Coach Ramel’s time in the program. In addition, he guided the JV program to several Coastal League Championships. During Coach Ramel’s tenure at Parker, several student-athletes from the program continued their athletic careers at the next level. He also assisted the Girls Cross Country team to their 5th consecutive CIF title and a 3rd place finish at the state championship and the Boys Cross Country team to their first CIF title in over 34 years. Prior to Francis Parker, Coach Ramel lead several successful campaigns as the Head Girls Basketball coach at Pacific Ridge School and Canyon Crest Academy. Both programs saw a double-digit increase in wins and postseason success after Coach Ramel assumed leadership. Canyon Crest Academy also won the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic during his tenure - the largest holiday basketball tournament in San Diego with over 80 teams represented from all over the country. Coach Ramel has an M.A. in Coaching and Athletic Administration and is state-certified in K-12 Health and Physical Education. He lives in Raleigh with his wife Melissa and daughter Adalyn (age 2).
  • Assistant Coach
    Brittan Gourley was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina and is a 2013 Sanderson High School graduate. In 2017, she graduated from Appalachian State University with a B.S. in elementary education and a concentration in mathematics. Coach Gourley and her husband, Jeremy, met while studying at App State and were recently married this past June. They recently adopted a new puppy, Ellie. Coach Gourley is a 2nd-grade teacher at Brooks Museums Magnet Elementary School. Her husband is a special education teacher at Garner high school. Coach Gourley grew up playing basketball and has two years of coaching experience. She is so excited to be a part of the Ravenscroft women’s program and is looking forward to the 2018-2019 season!
  • Assistant Coach
    Kim van der Heijden and her husband Allard moved to the Raleigh area 3 years ago and their two boys Jake and Eric attend Ravenscroft and also played for the men’s varsity team. Kim attended UMass Lowell and play for their women’s program. After graduation, she played 3 years in Europe. Kim has always had a passion for coaching and coached for several years at the middle school level, elite travel teams. She is excited to be part of the Ravenscroft women’s program.
