Welcome to Ravenscroft! On this page, specifically designed for our new families, you will find timelines for upcoming events, required forms, choosing classes, school supplies and much more.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Ravenscroft's Opening of School Email is sent on August 1, 2018, and contains essential information related to starting the school year. You will find most of the information you'll need in this important communication from the school. New Parent Usernames and Passwords for Veracross will be emailed in early July.

Important Information

Jones Health Center and Physicals: Action Items

Where we are:
Jones Health Center is located in the center of campus, not far from the Bell Tower.

Who we are:
Most days the center is staffed with a family nurse practitioner (Rebecca Nelson) and a registered nurse (Gina Taylor) who work together to keep students healthy and safe during the school day.

We are able to dispense some over-the-counter medications to students during the school day as needed. An example: ibuprofen/acetaminophen for a student’s headache or cough drops for a cough. In order for us to give any over-the-counter medications, we must have an annual medication permission form on file, signed by both the parents and the physician.

Forms and Requirements:
There are forms we require and there are forms the state requires. While we are an independent school we still must follow N.C. guidelines with regard to immunization and physical requirements. The State of N.C. allows a 30-day grace period from the first day a student is enrolled, and we extend the same grace for our forms/requirements (with the exception of Athletics, whose forms which must be completed before an student can try out for a team).

Please be aware if required forms are not completed within 30 days of admission, access to school/school activities will may be limited.

N.C. requirements for new students:

  • Recent Physical (needs to be within the past 13 months)
  • Current Immunization Record

  • Consent for Medical Treatment
  • Consent for Off-Campus Activities

For our international families or children not previously vaccinated in N.C.: you can visit http://www.immunize.nc.gov/ to review requirements, or just give us a call and we can clarify N.C. immunization requirements based on grade level.

Don’t wait until the last day, as the logistics of logging into the system, and getting physician-signed physicals and immunization records can be time consuming.

Magnus login instructions/link:

  1. Log onto the Magnus health website (use the same username and password as Veracross)
    https://secure.magnushealthportal.com/vclogin/login.jsf?schoolID=248995
  2. Read through and answer the conditional questions
  3. Complete the vital health record (yes/no questions regarding your child’s overall health)
  4. Complete the online signature in Consent for Medical Treatment section and Consent for Off-Campus Activities
  5. You will be able to print any needed forms from Magnus, and once completed be able to scan/upload the forms directly into Magnus

Additional forms; some require both physician and parent signatures:

  • Over-the-counter Medication Permission Form, required if you want your child to get over-the-counter medications if needed during the school day (for example, Tylenol for a headache)
  • Prescription Medication Permission Form, required if your child needs medications administered DAILY at school
  • Asthma Action Plan, required if your child has asthma
  • Migraine Action Plan, required if your child has migraines
  • Allergy Action Plan, required if your child has severe allergies to food or insects
  • Diabetes Action Plan, required if your child has diabetes
  • Seizure Action Plan , required if your child has seizures

Additional forms are required for participation in Ravenscroft Athletics.

The scan-upload process may sound daunting. The easiest way is to snap a picture using a smartphone, and the form can be immediately uploaded. However if you run into any difficulty during this process, the Parent Helpline at Magnus is 1-877-461-6831 (and I have found them to be MOST helpful) or just give me a call 919-847-0900 (x2239 or x2845).

Fine Arts

  • The Opening of School email will include the following Fine Arts information:
    • Ensembles tryout dates and registration
    • Dates for band, concert and drama production tryouts
    • Date of fittings for performance clothingNeeded Clothing for Performances (sizing typically takes place the morning before the first day of school):

Athletics

  • Tryouts and practice start dates change each year based on the NCISAA schedules. These dates will be posted on the Athletics calendar as we receive them.
  • Sports sign-up/organizational meetings precede tryouts by approximately three to four weeks.
    • The Fall Sports meeting is May 8 at 3:40 p.m.
  • Specific try-out dates can also be found on Team pages.
  • Forms and dates for physicals (where to find and due dates): Physical must be updated every 13 months, while all other forms are due by June 1 for the coming year. See all necessary forms here. These should be uploaded to Magnus.
  • Athletic passes come out of the Business Office with school parking passes.

Welcome to Lower School!

April/May

  • Friday, April 27: Spring Fan Day, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Events on every field.
  • Thursday, May 10: New Family Open House, 5-6:30 p.m. at the Ravenscroft Welcome Center
  • Transition Meetings: New families are invited to attend these grade specific parent meetings that take place in April and May. All transition meetings take place in the Lower School Winston Library, except for rising sixth grade, which will take place in the Jones Theatre.

    • Tuesday, May 8: Rising Sixth-Grade Parent Transition Meeting, 7-8 p.m.
    • Friday, May 18: Rising Fifth-Grade Parent Transition Meeting, 2-3 p.m.
    • Monday, May 21: Rising PreK Parent Transition Meeting, 8-9 a.m.
    • Monday, May 21: Rising Third-Grade Parent Transition Meeting, 2-3 p.m.
    • Tuesday, May 22: Rising Kindergarten Parent Transition Meeting, 8-9 a.m.

June/July

  • Parent Portal (Veracross) access will be emailed.
  • Summer Grade Level Events: dates determined by Grade Level Representatives (GLR) each summer. Each GLR will be in touch.
    • Grade-level representatives are members of the Parents' Association.

August

  • August 1: Opening of School Email will include Lead From Here framework, list of teams and co-curricular activities, schedule, handbook, curriculum guide, dress code and dining information.
    • Class Lists: shared August 1 through the Opening of School Mailing
  • Monday, August 20: Lower School New Student Breakfast, 9-9:45 a.m, Dining Hall
  • Monday, August 20: New Student Orientation, 10-11 a.m., Lower School Gym
  • Monday, August 20: New Family Barbecue at Pugh Pond. More details will be shared via email.
  • Monday, August 20: Extended Day Orientation, 11 a.m.-noon, Lower School Gym
  • After-School Offerings: The official list of offerings and schedule will be sent to all Lower School families.

September

May

  • Look for the welcome email with information about setting up a time for course registration and math placement testing, if needed.

June/July

August

  • Monday, August 20: Ravens Greet Orientation for new seventh and eighth-grade students, 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Includes Chromebook distribution/training and taking of photos for ID cards

    • Orientation for all students, dismissal at noon
    • Sports Team lunches and practice, noon
  • Chromebooks will be distributed to all sixth grade students in the first few weeks of school.

September

Welcome to Upper School!

April/May


  • Letter from Head of Upper School with information related to placement tests, scheduling meeting, etc.

June/July


  • June 7 at 3 p.m. and June 11 at 10 a.m.: Placement test dates (details in May letter)
    • On placement test dates, come to US office to schedule new family meeting (details in May letter).
  • Summer reading assignments (summer book(s) for English), assignment for AP US History if a junior enrolling in APUSH
  • Parent Portal (Veracross) access will be emailed.
  • Purchase textbooks (many will be provided by school), following new family meeting.

August

  • August 1: Opening of School Email will include Lead From Here framework, list of teams and co-curricular activities, schedule, handbook, curriculum guide, dress code and dining information.
  • Students can purchase a calculator from teacher during the first week of school.
  • Supply Lists: There is not a set supply list for Upper School. Students may choose to bring whatever supplies they wish.
  • Before school starts, add money to dining account. More information will be included in the Opening of School Email.
