Ravenscroft will be hosting the Wake County Special Olympics spring games for the 25th year on April 20th and 21st. Taking place over two days the Special Olympics will welcome 800+ athletes from area schools along with their families and teachers. Over 700 volunteers include 250+ Ravenscroft students, 70 Ravenscroft parent volunteers, alumni and faculty members. The Special Olympics Spring Games involve athletes with developmental disabilities who have trained for a minimum of eight weeks to compete in track and field, softball-throwing and play activities.
This year, Ravenscroft’s Junior Class is highly involved in the planning, management and coordination of the event, working closely with Wake County Special Olympics and the City of Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department. Students from across divisions participate by volunteering the day of as a Buddy or in other roles, visiting the schools and training with athletes prior to the event, decorating signs and lunch bags for athletes, building podiums, etc. Faculty, staff and alumni also participate in the event in various roles.
