Ravenscroft football and wrestling standout Calvin Atkeson '18 was honored Wednesday, Jan. 10, by Raleigh Sports Club as Student Athlete of the Week award during their weekly luncheon. The keynote speaker was Bubba Cunningham, athletic director of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
Calvin was selected for this recognition based on his excellent academic record; community service projects including MATHNC, a peer-based tutoring program he started with Clay Baker '18; and his athletic success in football and wrestling.
A few of Calvin's many accolades include:
- News & Observer All-Metro Football selection (2017)
- NC Preps Rivals Private Schools All-State Football selection (2017)
- Two-time NCISAA All-State Football selection (2016, 2017)
- Three-time BEIFC All-Conference selection (2015, 2016, 2017)
- Defending NCISAA Wrestling State Champion, 287-lb. weight class
- Three-Time TISAC Wrestling Conference Champion, 287-lb.weight class
He has committed to play football for Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.
"Calvin Atkeson has been an outstanding and true student-athlete in his time at Ravenscroft. He embodies all the principals, passion and drive, combined with a very strong work ethic, which help him excel both in and out of the classroom," said Ravenscroft Athletic Director and head football coach Ned Gonet. "Whether on the football field or on the wrestling mat, he competes at a very competitive level and provides sound, solid leadership to his teammates and peers. Calvin has a very bright future ahead of him and I will look forward to seeing the impact he makes in his future endeavors."
